Tourist Information Display at the Cristo Redentor

Public information display screens are now ubiquitous in many global tourist attractions, and serve a dual purpose of informing visitors of the details of the site, while reducing the number of queries received by staff. In many cases now the management of these sites is looking beyond one-way communication with visitors, to a situation where tourists can interact with rich media displays to learn more about the places they are visiting.

The Cristo Redentor is an iconic monument overlooking Rio de Janeiro, and is recognized as a symbol of Brazil throughout the world. Opened in 1931, the attraction welcomes over two million visitors annually from all over the globe.

The Challenge

The visitor center at the Cristo Redentor required a compact robust PC to power interactive multimedia displays. The installation was planned to be outdoors, so the successful technology would have to be weatherproof and able to operate in a wide range of temperatures. The computer chosen would also need to power two high definition (1080P) displays simultaneously.

The Solution

Lanner’s LEC-2280 series is the ideal device for the stated needs of robustness, dual HD display support, and ability to operate in high temperatures. Customers of the LEC-2280 can choose from a range of processors, and in this case the Intel® Core® i7 “Ivy Bridge” was selected as the most appropriate CPU for the demands of the application. With industrial components the LEC-2280 can operate continuously in temperatures of up to 55ºC, ensuring stability even in the tropical conditions of Rio de Janeiro. The whole installation is embedded in an IP-66-certified housing to keep it operational in all weather conditions.

The Result

The Cristo Redentor visitor center now offers a broader range of informational content to visitors, ensuring a higher quality of experience, at a reasonable cost and with a high level of reliability.

LEC-2280 fanless embedded computers use Intel® 3rd Generation Core® i3/i5/i7 processors, they are designed for wide deployment in application-specific environments. Also available is the high performance variant SKU-7B with i7-3612QE quad-core processors and the power efficient SKU-7A with the i7-3555LE CPU.

What is more, LEC-2281 is the successor to the LEC-2280. The fanless LEC-2281 comes with Intel®’s 4th generation Core™ i7/i5/i3 processors and it offers richer expansion and I/O options that include Intel® HD Graphics 4600, HDMI, VGA and DVI-D interface, dual 2.5″ HDD/SSD drive bays and one mSATA socket; expansion is made possible via the included PCI, PCI Express x16 and the full-sized mini-PCIe socket with SIM card reader. The LEC-2281‘s high-performance processors, scalable expansion capability and flexible I/O options make it the all-in-one, one-for-all solution for almost all IoT and industry 4.0 application scenarios.
