Hyper-Converged Network Platform Enables Intelligent Fleet and Transportation Services

Hyper-Converged Network Platform Enables Intelligent Fleet and Transportation Services

Background

Nowadays vehicles are equipped with subsystems that are digitalized and connected, and thus transportation companies are seeking intelligent and innovative solutions to meet new demands from consumers. For instance, digital payment is implemented in cabs for the convenience of tourists, and in fact they can pay the fare electronically through the App of transport service providers.

In regions where the local governments are eager to promote tourism, fleet management companies may have to deploy digital broadcasting devices in the fleets that advertise tourist attractions in the area. Further, some devices might have been programmed with AI (Artificial Intelligence) enabled translation for passengers.

All the above mentioned scenarios are the challenges for today’s fleet management service providers. In other words, fleet management is no longer just providing visibility of driver/vehicle location and passenger safety, but also user-specific services to optimize customer retention. Thus, to cope with the changes in the market, fleet management are seeking cutting-edge, hyper-converged networking platform to integrate intelligent fleets and transport services without additional investments in physical equipments.

Requirements

All innovative fleet services generate massive volume of data and this has driven the data centers of fleet management companies to be more agile by integrating compute, storage and networking into one integrated, hyper-converged infrastructure, which simplifies and consolidates all the virtualization components through software approach. With software-defined nature, the hyper-converged infrastructure leverages existing hardware storage while adopting virtual controller to manage the physical devices. This policy-driven, software-defined nature brings economical benefits and convenience in IT management.

To achieve hyper-convergence, a professional system integrator in Japan contacted Lanner to come up with the cloud backend server that meets the following technological requirements:

  1. HybridTCA™ architecture to seamlessly integrate compute, storage and networking functions
  2. Multi-node server grade processors to perform the following fleet management tasks:
    • Communication and control for fleet management system and driver dispatch system, through GPS and 4G LTE frequencies
    • Voice recognition system for real-time multi-lingual translation in shuttle and transport services
    • Video streaming, Big Data analysis and demand forecasting
    • Real-time communication with vehicle surveillance systems
    • Infotainment and digital broadcasting system
    • Payment Transaction Control System
    • Convert Taxi Standard Protocol into network protocol
  3. Highest Storage Density for recorded and generated data, and with RAID support.

Lanner Solution

Through the collaboration project, Lanner deployed its HTCA-6310S, the highest storage density HybridTCA™ server, as the hyper-converged network platform for the data center of a fleet management company.

Empowered by high-performance CPUs, memory and high-density storage, HTCA-6310S can be linked with up to 400 in-vehicle computing systems simultaneously to perform IP camera surveillance and real-time communication through 4G LTE networks and GPS tracking, which means it can work with 400 fleets within the city via defined protocols. HTCA-6310S is a 3U storage server powered by dual Intel® Xeon® E5-2600 v3/v4 Series CPUs and up to 16x DDR4 R-DIMM. With up to 16 hot-swappable 3.5” storage bays, HTCA-6310S functions as hyper-converged data center storage server for the massive data generated by next-generation vehicle applications, such as data analysis engine, driving record database, boarding record database and geographic information system.
