Cloud-First SD-WAN Optimally Accommodates Growing Branch Networks

Background

Since the introduction of the cloud technology, there is a rapidly growing number of enterprises and government organizations adopting cloud-first approach, in which business applications are run and delivered on the cloud. As they launch more and more Apps and expand their operations, the WAN will play a key factor in this cloud-first competition.

Nowadays, SD-WAN has become the buzzword for WAN management, as conventional, MPLS-based WAN architecture seems inadequate to accommodate the growing demands in bandwidth and connectivity between branch and headquarter. In fact, MPLS model often causes latency due to the network backhaul when branch staff attempts to connect to the data center. In addition, the on-premise network equipments are time-consuming to repair, and costly if enterprises have to expand. Thus, SD-WAN, where all the WAN networks and backhaul are virtualized, seems to meet the economics and scalability.

SD-WAN optimizes the traffic by allowing the traffic to flow directly into the data center through the optimal channel. Configurations are made easier since the WAN is defined by software. Therefore, connectivity and firewall security can be configured in an end-to-end architecture among all the branches. On the other hand, without the use of on-premise equipment, SD-WAN helps save cost and time when expanding network infrastructure.

Requirements

An auto dealership based in the States has undergone a cloud transformation. They have migrated their business applications to the cloud and employees connect to enterprise network through T1, DSL or Point-to-Point wireless devices. In other words, in order to leverage existing firewall and protocols, they require the performance, agility, and reliability in the connectivity between expanding branches and the data center. Therefore, SD-WAN is the optimal solution.

High-performance resilience and load balancing

SD-WAN architecture offers automated load-balancing and WAN optimization by adopting white-box vCPE devices, mostly driven by Intel® x86 open platforms to deliver the satisfying performance and interoperability.

Interoperability with SD-WAN that could work with their existing

firewalls without any modifications to their security policies. SD-WAN promises interoperability so that enterprises are no longer tied by specific vendors for hardware and software assistance whenever they need to expand their infrastructure. In fact, SD-WAN can work compatibly with existing firewalls to provide end-to-end security.

VPN Enhancement With SD-WAN appliances

SD-WAN enables the end-to-end visibility of the VPN from all the branches. IT management can monitor the traffic in a real-time manner to make decisions for routing and failover.

Lanner Solutions

To accommodate the demands for resilience, performance and enhanced connectivity, Lanner has a wide range of vCPE white-box hardware pre-validated by major SD-WAN solution leaders in the market. The vCPE white-boxes from Lanner are driven by Intel® x86 open architecture to offer cost-effective, high-performance and shortened deployment time.

Most of Lanner vCPEs feature Intel® x86 multi-core CPU for running multiple VNFs, hardware acceleration like DPDK, Intel® QuickAssist, and AES-NI, and rich LAN port configurations. Suggested hardware solutions meet Zero-Provisioning and end-to-end demands to shorten the deployment time. For example, Lanner’s NCA-1510 is a valued desktop vCPE featuring Intel® Atom™ processor 2~8 Cores C3758/C3558/C3308 CPU, 4x RJ45, 2x SFP or 2x RJ45 (By SKU), 1 Pair of Gen3 Bypass (By SKU), 1x Onboard EMMC 8GB memory, Intel® AES-NI and Intel® QuickAssist. For 1U rackmount form factor, Lanner’s NCA-4210 is a valued package featuring Intel® 7th Gen Core™ i7/i5/i3 with Intel® H110 or C236 Chipset, 2x 288-pin DIMM DDR4 at 2400MHz up to 32GB, and multiple LAN configuration of RJ-45 GbE and SFP ports.
