A Next-generation Application Delivery Controller

A strategically deployed application delivery controller (ADC) provides not only improved security, visibility and acceleration; it ensures the availability of mission-critical applications. One of the global leaders in ADCs approached Lanner when they were developing their latest product. As a global leader, they were not looking for a standard run-of-the-mill application networking appliance. They were looking for hardware suited for a next generation application delivery controller.

The Challenge

Lanner was called upon to deliver a powerful platform, on which several applications such as an application delivery controller, carrier deployment of IPv6 migration/transition and cloud deployment could be built.

This platform also needed to support not only multi-tenancy for deployment at data centers, but also a large number of sessions with a fast transaction rate. It had to have competitive advantage in both performance and power/cost efficiency. Lanner was also reminded that with regard to physical dimensions, the less space-hogging this unit would be, the better.

The Solution

Lanner’s FX-7210 hardware platform proved to be the silver bullet solution that could meet the complex requirements.

The FX-7210 combines the multi-core capability of the high performance Intel® Xeon® processors with RISC-based network processing technology for optimal network throughput; and when compared with competitor products, which typically range from 6U to 7U, the FX-7210, although having two motherboards, was only 2U and it consumed two to three times less power.

What this meant was that the FX-7210 could be deployed as a single device that could handle multiple ADCs and run more than one routing domain, supporting up to 40 Gbps throughput on layer 4. This allowed the hosting of multiple customers at a data center through just one device and at the same time reduced the underlying cost of operation incurred from power consumption.

All in all, Lanner’s solution is a high performing ADC appliance with superb performance and reduced price per connection/per transaction/per throughput.

The Result

Lanner’s solution offered top notch performance with low power consumption at a reasonable cost. The client was able to use their new product to make a solid impact in the enterprise datacenter market and was among the first to successfully deploy IPv6 migration technology to its customers because of this product.

This client is now one of the very few companies in the application delivery controller market to offer appliances that leverage modular design and Intel’s Sandy Bridge technology.

Due to the success of this product, the client is now working with Lanner for the release of more products based on Intel’s Sandy Bridge technology.
