Lanner Teams up with Global Partners to Lead 5G Edge Computing

Wednesday, May 29th, 2019 (Taipei) – Lanner Electronics Inc., the pioneer in supplying white-box solutions for 5G edge computing and virtualization, collaborated with global partners to host the annual “SDN/NFV Seminar”. The featured themes include 5G networking, SDN (software-defined networks), NFV (network function virtualization), network security, edge computing and NR (New Radio), as these technologies will definitely revolutionize the future networking application and services.

In recent years, SDN, NFV and edge computing have been adopted by telecom operators to establish agile and software-defined networking. In fact, edge computing and SDN are considered as the core foundation of the 5G deployments.

In the mean time, Lanner has long been dedicated in network computing and Internet security. To extend the corporate’s dedication, Lanner established Telecom Application Business Unit 4 years ago, with the motivation to committing to vertical market of SDN/NFV. Currently, this business unit has already shown achievements and is accounted for 17% of the company’s revenue.

In fact, more than 50% of the SD-WAN vendors and telecom operators listed on Gartner 2018 report have adopted white-box vCPE/uCPE from Lanner to establish their virtualized network and SD-WAN architectures.

This year, with the anticipation of 5G and edge computing, Lanner teamed up with Intel, National Chiao Tung University, Check Point Software Technology, Versa Networks, and NoviFlow to host the 3rd annual Taipei SDN/NFV Seminar at Courtyear Marriot Taipei, as the venue to exchange latest technologies and applications.

The majorly featured themes this time included 5G edge computing, vCPE, SD-WAN and MEC (multi-access edge computing). Variety of SDN/NFV applications and developments has been addressed as the potential services available by 5G.

For the past years, Lanner has committed themselves in MEC edge computing to build up the 5G network infrastructure. MEC is deployed as edge data center to load-balance the cloud network, and thus improve the performance and user experience of 5G.

Jean Tseng, Vice President of Lanner, addressed that Lanner has designed HCI (hyper-converged infrastructure) platforms to meet the low latency, enhanced bandwidth, agility and scalability of 5G edge computing. He also stressed that Lanner will invite SDN/NFV partners to exchange and share successful application cases.

5G is anticipated to revolutionize the telecom cellular infrastructure, from a centralized cloud data center to a distributed, edge deployment. In addition, it is expected that NGCO (Next-Generation Central Office) will form the core of FMC (Fixed Mobile Convergence) network and will be dynamic for 5G.

Alan Lee, Marketing Manager of Network Virtualization and SDN of Intel in Asia-Pacific region, was invited to address the revolutionized network architecture by 5G. The evolution of networks has evolved from wired infrastructure to the virtualized edge. Various network functions, such as EPC, vBNG, and CMTS, can be virtualized and software-defined, and then extended to edge data center. Load-balancing and footprints are further enhanced while latency is minimized. For service providers, the revolutionized architecture offers them greater agility to add new application, function or service.

To build hyper-converged edge computing orchestration, Lanner has collaborated with National Chiao Tung University since 2018 to establish 5G MEC research lab. Departments of Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering from the university participated in the researches of 5G in EU and low-latency, enhanced bandwidth of telecom solutions of Lanner.

Chi-Yu, Lee, professor of information technology of National Chiao Tung University, gave a lecture about edge computing validation and the demonstration featured in MWC 2019, Spain. He addressed the use of Middle Box in MEC architecture to deploy Lanner hardware solutions in edge networking in order to achieve low latency, improved bandwidth for video streaming and VR/AR applications.

Security is perhaps one of the most concerned aspects of 5G cellular networks. Recent incidents of cyber threats and data breach have exposed vulnerability of today’s network. To establish real-time security in 5G infrastructure, it is necessary to redefine existing network infrastructure in order to aggregate robust and comprehensive security between cloud and mobile devices.

Vincent Liu, Taiwan Division Manager of Check Point Software Technologies, the global leader in network security, presented the comprehensive solution by integrating 3 core mitigation approaches: Real-time Threat Mitigation, Threat Intelligence Sharing, and Aggregated Protection, to protect all aspects of the network orchestration, including servers, traffic, cloud and mobile devices.

SD-WAN (software-defined WAN) abstracts a virtualized, software layer and deploys a white-box vCPE on top of the existing WAN infrastructure. The vCPE will run software VM (virtual machines) to integrate multiple connectivity channels, including MPLS, public Internet and broadband. With software abstraction interface, IT management can optimize traffic-routing, load-balancing, end-to-end visibility, policy automation, and security across all the network channels. Therefore, SD-WAN capitalizes hardware investments saves the OPEX.

Patrick Ho, Technical Director of Versa Networks, the world-leading SD-WAN vendor, presented the successful cases in SD-WAN, particularly in the areas of performance, agility and cost-effectiveness.

SDN, NFV and edge computing all address the importance of agility in future networks in order to implement network services without additional investment and HW/SW modification. In fact, network slicing will be the core technological element of 5G networks.

In this seminar, Lanner invited Jesper Eriksson, the VP of Global Sales and PM of NoviFlow, the world leader in openFlow switch, to share successful use cases of SDN deployments.
