The LEC-7230 : A Compact Powerhouse for Intelligent Ticket Kiosks

Introduction

Unmanned and interactive kiosks not only have revolutionized how goods and services are acquired but also have given rise to a sophisticated networked economy built upon retail diversity, convenience and cashless micropayments. These intelligent kiosks have become the new distribution channels and points of sales for many industries, including telecommunications, personal finance, photography, entertainment, food/dining and public transportation.

Customer Requirements

Lanner received an inquiry for an embedded hardware solution on which a city-wide network of ticket vending kiosks for a public transit operator was to be built. The said operator runs up to 90 percent of all metro and local bus lines in a major metropolitan city and its surrounding areas, covering a total distance of more than 900 kilometers and serving more than 500 million passengers per year.

The hardware requirements are as followed:

Lanner Solution

The LEC-7230 is powered by the Intel® Celeron® J1900 / N2930 or the Intel® Atom™ E3825 / E3845 CPU (codenamed Bay Trail). It features I/O interface for video, audio, network, serial functions and offers improved graphical and media performance for applications such as efficient imaging workflows, digital signage with secure content delivery and interactive clients (interactive kiosks, intelligent vending, ATM/POS terminals).

Customer’s Benefits

Measured at 198 mm x 42 mm x 144.8 mm or 7.79” x 1.65” x 5.7” (WxHxD), this appliance is one of the most compact solutions from Lanner, designed specifically for installation at locations with limited and confined spaces. The LEC-7230’s mounting options include wall mount, VESA mount, rack mount or DIN-rail; and this customer called upon Lanner’s customization service for designing the metal brackets needed for their particular deployment scenario using wall mount.

Tests for benchmarking the Intel® Celeron® J1900 CPU against its predecessor the Intel® Atom™ N2800 showed as much as 310% increase in performance but almost no increase in power consumption, making the LEC-7230 the ideal solution for applications that demand significantly improved processing performance and greatly optimized power efficiency.

Finally, this particular customer was able to opt out of using external serial device servers because the LEC-7230’s mini-PCIe can be leveraged for adding additional I/O and communications ports; such expansion capability not only improves system functionalities but also simplifies system integration, resulting in a faster and more timely system rollout.

Conclusion

These LEC-7230-based ticket vending kiosks can now be located in the lobbies of more than 100 metro stations and bus stops, providing comprehensive and convenient ticket sale service for all passengers. Their strategic placement at each station, made possible by the LEC-7230’s computing performance, compact/fanless design, flexible mounting options and expansion capability, is one of the contributing factors in a record-breaking increase in passenger traffic throughout this metropolitan city’s vast transportation network.

Lanner’s Intel Core i5/i7 powered LEC-2270P2, a box PC with multiple video-out ports and support for separate video streams on dual displays, is currently being considered for a project involving another high-volume public transit hub.
